Don’t Get Caught Short With House Insurance Cover

Over recent times we have seen huge increases in building costs, and yet we hear that most Kiwi’s have left their house insurance cover levels at the same as what they were when the policy was started.

Have you checked how much your house is currently insured for?
Do you know what your policy covers, or more importantly what it doesn’t cover?

With most policies you need enough cover to pay for a complete rebuild.

If you need to make a claim and you don’t have enough cover, you will have to pay for the difference between the cover and total rebuild cost yourself.

It would be suggested that you check if you are adequately covered.

We have been using the Cordell Sum Sure calculator to help establish the cost to rebuild your home, and it’s the same as what most insurance companies use too.

You Need To Cover All Rebuild Costs

House insurance covers the cost of rebuilding or repairing your home if it is damaged or destroyed. External garages, garden sheds and fences are also covered, as is the cost of replacing things like pipes, cables and drains. The costs of demolition, site clearance, and architects’ fees are also covered by house insurance.

You should make sure that you have adequate levels of house insurance cover.

In most cases it’s recommended to have a little more than the suggested amount, as this allows for future price increases over the next year. The extra cost is typically very minimal too.

Review Your House Insurance Costs

Now that you have reviewed the rebuild costs it’s time to check that you have the right policy and competitive premiums too.
