There is a new trend in building known as the tiny house.
We are not just talking about a small house, or a house that is less than the average size.
What Is A Tiny House?
People have realised that they do not need a big house to have all the comforts they want and in fact a smaller house will generally mean a smaller mortgage which is certainly an attraction.
Smaller houses do need a lot more focus on design as you need to make sure that every space is used as efficiently as possible. You cannot afford to have areas of waste and open spaces.
A tiny house by definition is small, but like a caravan or motor-home all spaces are cleverly used.
A Growing Trend
The concept of the tiny house is a big trend overseas and there is more being talked of tiny houses in New Zealand.
On Facebook there is a Tiny House New Zealand Community.
Website “Stuff” did an article on the tiny houses being the way of the future where Tim Cox shared his experiences and said “I want to be time-rich and people-rich… if you buy a house, it just becomes about the mortgage” hence his reason to build a small house.
We also found this website where Tom and Shaye share their idea’s on the tiny house concept and where you can purchase plans to build your own.
Even Campbell Live interviewed Brett Sutherland about his tiny house.

The Big Advantage
Of course when building a small house like this there should be considerable cost savings.
This is the big advantage as spending less should also mean a lesser need to borrow money and that means more money for other things in life.
It is a lifestyle choice and may be something that you do either early in life when you are single or a couple, or later in life after your family has left home.
